Local Employment Dynamics (LED) is a fascinating new program of the Census Bureau that produces data on employment, earnings by industry, job creation and turnover at the local level.
You can find LED data online at http://lehd.dsd.census.gov/led/index.html.
The Web site's Quick Links includes two key data sets:
- QWI Online (Quarterly Workforce Indicators) offers data for local areas on employment totals, earnings, and job creations/turnover from 2001 on; you can view data by sex, age group, and industry.
- Industry Focus lists top industries in an area and ranks industries based on employment, earnings, employment growth, etc.
As economic development organizations conduct strategic planning, identify supply and demand in particular industries, and look at how industries will be affected by an aging workforce, they will find this data invaluable.
Forty states now participate in the program, which is a voluntary partnership between the Census Bureau and state labor market information agencies. More states — including Arizona, we hope — are joining the program on a regular basis.
